Discovery Parks Backs Online Distribution For Caravan & Camping

15/05/2017

Outdoria Discovery Parks blog

Adelaide: Discovery Parks, the largest owner operator of holiday parks in Australia has backed the growth of online distribution for caravan and camping products with a minority investment in online marketplace Outdoria and its wholly owned subsidiary Go See Australia.

Both Outdoria and Go See Australia are powered by Marketplacer, a leading technology and business platform used globally by people and businesses that want to create successful online marketplaces.

Outdoria aims to be the premier Australian online go-to space for adventure and outdoors equipment. Go See Australia, its companion brand, has been recently relaunched with a vision to be Australia’s number-one destination for holiday and caravan park accommodation, experiences and hospitality.

Underpinning the target audience for both marketplaces is a love of caravanning, camping and the Australian outdoors.

CEO of Discovery Parks, Grant Wilckens, said “We are passionate about the caravan park industry. Our growth is dependent upon encouraging more people to participate in the sector and there is no doubt that growing online distribution is key to achieving that.”

Tourism Research Australia data for the year ending 2016 shows the highest recorded annual growth in domestic caravanning and camping overnight trips and visitor nights since data was first recorded in 1998.

This unprecedented growth saw Australians take a total of 11.7 million caravan and camping overnight trips, which represents a 9% increase on the previous year. The length of time spent caravanning and camping has also increased, with total domestic visitor nights in the sector numbering 51.6 million, growing 16%.*

While distribution opportunities abound for roofed accommodation (cabins) through online travel agents, the choices for taking campsites online are limited. To solve the sharing economy challenge, Discovery has partnered with best available marketplace technology to connect campsites with customers.

“The application had wider use than just ourselves,” continued Mr Wilckens, “we didn’t see
this as a Discovery initiative, rather, being in the best interests of customers and the industry
alike.”

General Manager for Outdoria, Drew Davies said, “"Caravan and camping is an exciting product in high demand and needs a simple path to market. Outdoria, through the Go See Australia marketplace are proud to be that path. Partnering with Discovery has ensured we design a customer experience that is fit for purpose for customers and the industry.

Mr Davies also added he sees “…huge opportunity for both platforms to promote the industry and its products/services through the development of innovative content” additionally, “…we are also extremely excited to begin utilising our vast data knowledge and resources to develop new consumer insights, opportunities and distribution channels for the industry”.

Go See Australia launched officially on Thursday at the Caravan Industry Association Australia conference on the Gold Coast. Other investors include Marketplacer and Jayco caravan founder Gerry Ryan.

Discovery Holiday Parks Byron Bay - Stage 1 Development

11/01/2016

Adelaide based Discovery Holiday Parks has today announced the completion of Stage One of its major redevelopment of the Byron Bay Holiday Park with further stages rolling out over the next two months.

Completed in time for the summer season are 16 new waterfront cabins built at a cost of $3 million and a massive new waterpark, 500sqm in size with a 3 metre high waterslide and a ¼ million litre free form lagoon style swimming pool.

The waterfront cabins are idyllically located on the north western side of the Park, positioned to take in the view from the lake. Each cabin has a private deck that is cantilevered over the lake ensuring prime waterfront location.

“These new waterfront cabins are the centrepiece of our development at Byron” said Discovery Holiday Parks Chief Marketing Officer Dana Ronan “They bring a real experiential element to accommodation with their quality finishing’s and unique waterfront positioning and, we believe, will change the perception of Holiday Park accommodation”.

The cabins have been uniquely designed with a shared entry such that they can be let as either a family three bedroom apartment, or as a studio or two bedroom apartment giving the Park much more flexibility in its room stock offering.

“Alongside the new cabins is our waterpark – one of the biggest caravan park waterparks in Australia and certainly the largest in the suite of Discovery properties”, said Discovery Holiday Parks Chief Marketing Officer Dana Ronan.  Significantly, the waterpark has been designed with a zero depth splash pad allowing minimal opportunity for water evaporation, with water cycled back into a balance tank where is treated and reused ensuring maximum efficiency of resources”.

The waterpark and the new cabins propel the park and the Byron Bay region into an affordable destination for families with a destination park specifically designed for young families with children aged 0-12, providing affordable and value for money family experiences.

Discovery Holiday Parks buys award winning Big 4 Emerald Beach Holiday Park

02/12/2015

Adelaide based Discovery Holiday Parks are delighted to announce iconic property Big 4 Emerald Beach Holiday Park is joining the Discovery family; just in time for the busy school holiday period.  To be rebranded Discovery Holiday Parks - Emerald Beach, the Park is located just ten minutes north of Coffs Harbour and the Big Banana and almost half way along the popular Sydney to Brisbane coastal drive.

The signature beachfront property has been recently redeveloped and will join Discovery’s expanding portfolio of Australian coastal and aquatic tourism experiences.  Configured with thirty cabins and ninety caravan sites, the Park is a contained haven for families and drive tourists alike.  The recent addition of a splash pad and water play area will only add to the Park’s appeal.

The refurbishments have been made possible after previous owners Kris and Schellea Fowler won a Government grant as part of the Tourism Industry Regional Development Fund.  “The grant helped us to realise our dream of a water play precinct specifically designed for younger children.  It’s a great fit with the Discovery portfolio and will suit their family market perfectly.” Kris said.

CEO of Discovery Holiday Parks, Grant Wilckens, says the group appreciates the hard work done by the Fowlers and believes these new park upgrades will contribute towards long term tourism growth in the Coffs Coast region. “We are excited to have such a well presented park join our collection and know these fantastic facilities will encourage more guests to choose Emerald Beach for their holidays,” Mr Wilckens said. Nestled in native coastal rainforest, Emerald Beach offers wonderful wildlife, beautiful beaches and breathtaking scenery.

A destination in its own right, Emerald Beach boasts three restaurants, organic produce shop, yoga studio, gallery and holiday patrolled ocean beaches. The property will be known as Discovery Holiday Parks – Emerald Beach from the 8th of December 2015.

BAROSSA TOURISM POISED FOR VINTAGE TIMES AS DISCOVERY BUYS TANUNDA CARAVAN PARK FOR $5.25 MILLION

03/09/2014

Tourism and business in South Australia’s iconic Barossa Valley is set for a major boost following Discovery Holiday Parks’ purchase of the Tanunda Caravan and Tourist Park and its plans to upgrade the facility through significant infrastructure investment.

The $5.25 million acquisition, to be renamed Discovery Holiday Parks – Barossa Valley, is in line with the company’s strategy  of expanding its portfolio to include parks in the country’s most desirable locations that offer the best possible visitor experience for the caravanning, camping and holidaymaking communities.

It is the second such purchase since leading super fund, Sunsuper, took a majority stake in the $240 million Discovery Holiday Parks in February 2014 and follows Discovery’s May 2014 decision to buy Discovery Holiday Parks – Tannum Sands in northern Queensland for a similar price.

Grant Wilckens, CEO of Adelaide-based Discovery Holiday Parks, said the Tanunda park meets all the criteria of the company’s growth strategy and is a significant addition to its portfolio that now stands at 33 parks – and more than 6,500 accommodation sites – located in some of the country’s most spectacular settings.

“As the country’s largest holiday park accommodation owner and operator, we’re committed to further growth and are always on the lookout for parks in key locations.  We wish to build on the current mix of park accommodation options available, enhance the tourism experience for our customers and grow tourist numbers,” Mr Wilckens said.

“In Discovery Holiday Parks – Barossa Valley, we have a facility that ticks all the boxes.

“It lies in the heart of the country’s most famous and celebrated wine region and its mix of luxury and standard accommodation options, powered and unpowered sites, and recreational facilities have long appealed to our core target markets of families, touring couples and the so-called grey nomads.

“Our next step is to invest in the park through general facility improvements and develop more cabin accommodation to further capitalise on the area’s enormous tourism opportunities.”

Discovery Holiday Parks – Barossa Valley lies on a beautiful and shady 7.3 hectare site and currently comprises 273 sites made up of thee luxury villas known as Barossa Havens, 35 cabins ranging from the deluxe (six) and superior (nine) to standard (six) and budget (14) options.

These are complemented by 218 caravan and camping sites, of which 121 are powered, a kiosk, two amenities blocks, two barbecue areas, a fully equipped laundry, a recreational hall that seats up to 130 people and includes games and TV rooms, a community area and a full kitchen, and a soundshell for outdoor entertainment and movies.  There’s also a solar heated swimming pool and, for the younger set, a children’s playground, a jumping cushion and a bicycle hire facility.

The park also has 20 sites occupied by permanent residents.

“Discovery Holiday Parks – Barossa Valley is an exceptional acquisition that will allow us to continue on our strong growth path while contributing to tourism and job creation in the region,” added Mr Wilckens.

Discovery Holiday Parks positioned for further growth following successful ownership transition led by Sunsuper

10/02/2014

Discovery Holiday Parks (Discovery Parks) today announced the completion of a successful ownership transition through which Sunsuper, an existing major shareholder in Discovery Parks, has acquired a significant majority of the business from fellow shareholders Next Capital, Allegro Funds and Macquarie Funds. Key management will remain as shareholders and continue to be integrally involved in the future growth of Discovery Parks.

The transaction values Discovery Parks at an enterprise value of $240 million, excluding Discovery Parks Onslow, which will be retained by the existing shareholders under a management agreement with Discovery Parks. Sunsuper is one of Australia's largest superannuation funds with more than one
million members and $26 billion in funds under management.

Sunsuper's Chief Investment Officer David Hartley said the move was a strong investment for Sunsuper's members. "The holiday park industry is a strong and resilient sector and demand has continued to increase, even when there has been a decline in other forms of tourism accommodation," said Mr Hartley.

"We've been investing in Discovery Parks for many years and it has grown over time to deliver strong returns for members. "This is a long term investment for Sunsuper and we plan to continue growing the business with the view to increase the number of parks within the Discovery Parks Group and provide long term benefits for Sunsuper's members."

Discovery Parks Co-Founder and CEO, Grant Wilckens said: "This ownership transition is an important milestone in the evolution of Discovery Holiday Parks and allows for a new phase of growth supported by Sunsuper. We continue to see excellent opportunities in the caravan and camping sector evidenced by the strong growth of our business which has delivered more than 21 per cent compound growth in earnings over the last five years.

"This reflects the outstanding quality of our parks portfolio, in part a reflection of the significant effort to continually upgrade park infrastructure following the investment of more than $52 million as part of a nationwide upgrade program.

"We are delighted to further our partnership with a major Australian institutional investor who has an intimate understanding of our business and provides significant financial capacity to grow and develop our portfolio. Our partnership with Sunsuper will enable us to continue to expand and improve our accommodation options for leisure, workforce and corporate travellers.

"Discovery Parks has also been fortunate to have benefitted from the financial and strategic stewardship of Next, Allegro and Macquarie. During their ownership tenure, the business has been transformed to an integrated park accommodation platform, through investment in sophisticated operating systems, the strengthening of our acquisition and development capability, and significant
investment in the portfolio, including diversifying into workforce accommodation," Mr Wilckens continued.

Discovery Parks has been advised by Fort Street Advisers, Minter Ellison and Ernst & Young. Sunsuperhas been advised by KPMG and Ashurst Australia.

DISCOVERY STEPS UP TO THE PLATE IN DARWIN

27/11/2013

HOLIDAY PARKS GROUP TO MAKE $6M INVESTMENT IN NT TOURISM

Discovery Parks, Australia’s largest owner and operator of lifestyle holiday parks and workforce accommodation, has pledged a landmark investment of $6 million towards the expansion of its Darwin holiday park.

Part of a nationwide program of investment by Discovery Parks totalling $50 million, the site expansion means the park will be now be able to accommodate over 2000 holidaymakers and corporate guests.

The investment will deliver an additional 48 deluxe studio units of accommodation to the park, increasing park self-contained cabin capacity by 25% to 500 per night, while also providing for a number of functional and aesthetic upgrades including the development of a 90-seat restaurant and other amenities.

Discovery Parks CEO, Grant Wilckens said, “The mining and tourism boom is still alive and well in Darwin. The city is growing so rapidly in both population and appeal, and it has been apparent for some time that there is insufficient infrastructure to support such massive growth.

“We believe in Darwin’s potential as a tourist and cultural destination and also as a key player in Australia’s resources sector, and we are prepared to invest in the future of the city.

“As such, we are delighted to announce a $6 million investment which will facilitate the upgrade and expansion of our Darwin park. Upon completion of the project, we will be able to accommodate over 2000 guests between caravan sites and cabins, which we believe will attract important tourist dollars to the Top End,” Mr Wilckens said

Formerly known as Shady Glen Tourist Park before the $14 million acquisition by the Discovery Parks group in 2012, the park welcomes 21,000 visitors annually, with 17,000 holidaymakers accounting for 80% of the total occupancy.

With its close proximity to Darwin’s International Airport, the Darwin park provides convenient accommodation for holidaymakers and corporate guests alike. The park is close to a number of major tourist attractions including the Hidden Valley Motorsport complex and Charles Darwin National Park, as well as significant infrastructure projects such as Inpex’s Ichthys LNG processing plant.

Tourist park accommodation in the Northern Territory was forecast to grow up to 12% in the five years to 2014, with Darwin predicted to provide much of that growth.

“With 24,000 visitor nights at the park in the first half of 2013, and already strong forward bookings of 25,800 leading into the wet season, we certainly view the expansion of the site as essential in order to adequately cater for Darwin’s  seemingly insatiable appetite for high quality, affordable holiday accommodation,” Mr Wilckens said.

KALGOORLIE STRIKES GOLD WITH DISCOVERY PARKS

18/11/2013

ACCOMMODATION GROUP BANKS ON CITY'S FUTURE WITH $3M INVESTMENT
Discovery Parks, Australia's largest owner and operator of lifestyle, holiday and workforce accommodation parks, is pleased to announce a landmark $3 million investment towards the expansion of its park in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The development will deliver 16 additional cabins to the site as well as a new Manager's residence, while providing for a number of functional and aesthetic upgrades.

Part of a nationwide program of investment by Discovery Parks totalling $50 million, the upgrade of the Kalgoorlie park also include a number of important repairs to facilities damaged by an earthquake in April, 2010. The parks will be now be able to accommodate over 850 guests.

Discovery Parks CEO, Grant Wilckens said: "We are extremely proud to announce the expansion of our park in Kalgoorlie. Our investment of $3 million reaffirms our ongoing commitment to industry in the city by providing long-term, high-quality accommodation to address the ever-increasing demand from tourists and local contractors.

"We continue to believe in the potential of Kalgoorlie and Western Australia to thrive as a productive and prosperous region. Flexible, high-quality accommodation is integral to the creation of an attractive business environment in Kalgoorlie and is necessary for the continued prosperity of the city. We view our $3 million commitment as a step towards securing the city's long-term economic future.

"The upcoming construction of the prison shows that while Kalgoorlie has a long history of dependence on resource-based investment, this is no longer necessarily the case. Large-scale infrastructure projects will invariably follow the growth of the city, and we see the expansion of our parks as essential to adequately cater for the ever-growing appetite of companies seeking comfortable, reputable and flexible accommodation for their workforce," Mr Wilckens said.

The expansion of the parks was completed by Kent Corp, selected after a competitive tender process ahead of a number of in-state rivals.

With self-contained en-suite cabins that feature large rooms with sheltered courtyards and verandas, Discovery Parks provides industry-leading accommodation options across many sectors.

The Kalgoorlie and Boulder parks, in conjunction with the company's other parks located at Perth, Bunbury, Lake Kununurra and Onslow, are part of a state-wide network of high-quality, cost effective commercial accommodation sites.

The park has experienced consistent growth since their acquisition by Discovery Parks in 2004, with more than 15,000 guests accommodated at the park in 2013, with an increase of approximately 4% over the past three years.

"With construction nearing completion, we look forward to welcoming new guests and we hope that our expanded offering will help us to improve on last year's record number of visitors we accommodated in Kalgoorlie," Mr Wilckens said.

$150M EXPANSION UNDERWAY FOR DISCOVERY PARKS ONSLOW ACCOMODATION PARK

13/11/2013

Leading accommodation services provider, Discovery Holiday Parks (Discovery) is pleased to announce completion of the first stage of its $150 million expansion project for the Onslow accommodation park and mining camp in Western Australia.

With $60m already invested in the development, stage one delivered 96 deluxe studio rooms with occupation starting in August taking the total rooms at the property to approximately 300. The second stage of the project commenced in October with an additional 120 in development. On completion of the final stage the park will offer up to 880 rooms.

The new rooms include modern conveniences such as sound proofing, double beds, enhanced broadband internet access, satellite and free to air digital TV, large work stations, balconies and modern decor.

The expansion project involves a complete site regeneration with new facilities including a 320-seat dining room, significantly enhanced and expanded kitchen, conference rooms, and extensive recreation facilities incorporating a bar and gymnasium.

Grant Wilckens, Chief Executive of Discovery, commented: "The expansion will help address local accommodation issues and make a significant contribution to the local community."

"We are delighted to be able to significantly invest in the local community with the park now employing more than 60 staff, not to mention the additional follow on investment additional visitors will bring."

"We believe this is a model that can be replicated in other regional locations which continue to experience accommodation shortages. Our novel approach involved installation of beautifully designed modular rooms enabling us to rapidly ramp up to meet client requirements."

Discovery’s $3m Pledge to Drive Mount Isa Employment & Tourism

04/09/2013

Discovery Holidays Parks, Australia’s largest owner and operator of lifestyle holiday parks, is pleased to announce a significant three million dollar investment towards the expansion of its park in Mount Isa, QLD. The investment will deliver an additional 48 units of accommodation to the park as well as creating up to 25 new jobs.

Part of a nationwide program of investment by Discovery Holiday Parks totalling 50 million dollars, the upgrade of the Mount Isa park will also include the construction of a new kitchen, dining room, reception area and office. Upon completion of the project, the park will provide employment for up to 50 local people.

The park expansion will be completed by local contractors under the guidance of a prominent Queensland construction company, selected after a competitive tender process ahead of a number of in-state rivals. The construction phase alone will employ an additional 20 tradespeople for three months.

The Mount Isa park welcomes almost 7,000 holidaymakers annually, while also providing accommodation for corporate travellers. Approximately 27% of the park’s capacity is dedicated to long-term and permanent residents, with 57% of the park regularly occupied by commercial tenants.

Discovery Holiday Parks CEO, Grant Wilckens said “We are extremely proud to announce our investment of three million dollars which will facilitate the upgrade and further expansion of our Mount Isa park. This investment reaffirms our ongoing commitment to the city of Mount Isa and its people by providing long-term, sustainable employment for locals and attracting important tourist dollars to the region.

“Since our acquisition of the park in 2011, we have become acutely aware of the challenges facing local businesses in Mount Isa and North-Western Queensland following a downturn in resource-based investment.

“We see increased investment in the hospitality and tourism industry as imperative to the continued prosperity of the city during this challenging period, and view our three million dollar commitment as a significant step in this direction,” Mr Wilckens said.

Set by the banks of the iconic Leichhardt River, the Mount Isa park is popular with active families eager to explore Queensland’s Outback and Central regions. With other Discovery Holiday Parks located at Lake Maraboon and Rockhampton, the Mount Isa park is a favourite destination for touring holidaymakers making the journey between Queensland and the Northern Territory.

The park has experienced consistent growth since its acquisition by Discovery Holiday Parks, with more than 30,000 visitor nights at the park in 2013, an increase of approximately 2.5% on the previous year. If current occupancy rates continue, it is estimated that the expansion of the Mount Isa park will inject up to $350,000 into the local economy annually.

“We certainly view this expansion as essential in order to adequately cater for the ever-growing appetite of holidaymakers looking for high quality, affordable holiday accommodation in a unique part of Queensland.

“With the construction and landscaping phase planned for completion by early 2014, we look forward to welcoming back long-time members as well as new guests, and we hope that our expanded offering will help us to improve on last year’s record number of visitors,” Mr Wilckens said.

Water Park to Open at Iconic Local Tourist Site after Historic $1.6 Million Investment

04/09/2013

Discovery Holidays Parks, Australia’s largest owner and operator of lifestyle holiday parks, is pleased to announce the construction of its first water park, located at Pambula Beach on the New South Wales Sapphire Coast. A landmark addition to the area, the water park is the result of a $1.6 million dollar investment by the company, which will also deliver eight additional units of accommodation to the holiday park, increasing cabin capacity at the park by 14% while providing enhancements to the overall aesthetics of the site.

Discovery Holiday Parks expects to welcome its 130,000th visitor to the Pambula Beach park in December, having experienced 8.5% growth in cabin occupancy since the park’s acquisition in January, 2006.

Boasting two water slides, five water cannons, a six-metre tall tipping bucket, Aqua Domes and more than 35 interactive play features surrounded by a 250m2 lagoon, the Pambula Beach water park is the first of its kind in the region. The water park will be open to Discovery Holiday Parks’ guests as well as the general public, whether local residents or tourists.

The water park is to be constructed by local contractors under the guidance of Sydney-based company ‘PlayRope’, selected after a competitive tender process ahead of four other companies. The construction phase alone will employ up to 30 tradespeople for over three months.

Discovery Holiday Parks CEO, Grant Wilckens said “We are thrilled to be building an asset for the local community which will provide sustained employment and important tourist dollars to the region.

“Having been part of the Sapphire Coast community for seven years, we very much view ourselves as locals. We have always maintained a strong desire to support the community and view Pambula Beach as the perfect location to undertake our first project of this scale.

“The $1.6 million dollar investment is also significant in that it will facilitate further expansion of the park; meaning we will be able to accommodate over 1800 guests in both cabins and sites at the completion of the project. This investment reinforces our commitment to offer premium accommodation choices and facilities to all Discovery Holiday Parks guests,” Mr Wilckens said.

The Pambula Beach park is famed for its picturesque beachfront location. Tucked into the northern tip of the rugged Ben Boyd National, the park is a magnet for families and is especially popular with residents of Sydney, country NSW and the ACT.

The park experiences consistent occupancy rates for much of the year, with its busiest period during the summer holidays. Its growing popularity with guests is illustrated by the 23% increase in the number of repeat visitors since 2010. Much of the holiday trade in the cooler months is buoyed by adventure seekers; with Pambula Beach extremely popular for whale and dolphin watching, charter fishing and water sports.

“With the construction of the water park due to be completed by early December, we are expecting to welcome a record number of families enjoying the Christmas school holiday period, and hope that our expanded offering has them coming back for years to come,” Mr Wilckens said.

The Clare park has a reputation for being pet friendly and a delight for active families. Nestled amongst 30 acres of unspoilt bush terrain, and only two hours’ drive from the state capital, the leisure park is especially popular with residents of Adelaide, Regional South Australia and Victoria.
The park experiences consistent occupancy rates for much of the year, while its growing popularity with visitors is illustrated by the 30% increase in the number of repeat visitors in just its first year as a Discovery Holiday Park. Typically of the Clare Valley region, much of the annual occupancy is based around the thriving wine industry, with Discovery Holiday Parks a favourite with travellers who are both discerning and budget-conscious, while eager to explore the wine region, Mid-North and the South Australian outback.
